Jerilee Wei commented on the post, Impressment of American Seamen 11 years, 11 months ago
The entire War of 1812 is very much erased from the American textbooks as merely a chapter in our history to be glossed over especially at the hands of our school systems. Perhaps it is a way of hoping the world […]

Jerilee Wei commented on the post, Yellow Fever: Napoleon's Most Formidable Opponent 11 years, 11 months ago
Timely article, since yellow fever is still a serious health threat in many parts of the world, especially South America and in Africa! It reminded me of a once well-known old time cartoon figure, who was […]

Governor commented on the post, Malaria – The Mystery Plague of Colonial America 11 years, 11 months ago
I enjoyed reading your article.
Malaria did indeed change the course of history on many occasions. For instance, when Joseph Alston was governor of South Carolina during the War of 1812, and hence commander in […] -

I enjoyed reading your article. It is shocking how much depends on immunity to disease, both in war and in peace.
There are many lessons to be learned from this example of how disease can change the course of a […] -

This is a very important history lesson, and I am surprised more people do not know about how the Impressment of Americans lead to the War of 1812.

Pam Keyes commented on the post, An Interview with Pam Keyes about Jean Laffite 12 years, 2 months ago
What plantation is it, I might know more about it. Laffite had connections with Destrehan plantation and Magnolia Grove, in addition to some in the Donaldsonville area and on the German Coast above New Orleans.

Aya Katz commented on the post, Commemoration of a Hero: Jean Laffite and the Battle of New Orleans 12 years, 3 months ago
Why anyone like Pickles would have a motive to discredit Jean Laffite is beyond me, unless it is to make a name for himself as a historical revisionist. Unfortunately, in the past it was not the British, but […]

I have invested too much time on this discussion today, considering I am working on a lengthy new article about the Philadelphia connection to early New Orleans. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint about what did or did not happen at the Battle of New Orleans, and it is true there are quite a bit of variances between historians. It would be nice if Jackson’s daybook were able to be referenced for the absolute facts on the American side, but it apparently has been lost to history for quite some time.

Aya Katz commented on the post, The Meaning of Treason: United States v. Aaron Burr 12 years, 3 months ago
Yes, it is easy to get confused about what treason actually consists of, Pam, because everyone seems to have some preconceived notions of what it ought to be, many of which are like the English common law […]

People do not usually remember Aaron Burr as a father. They remember perhaps that he was the third vice president of the United States. They remember, if anything, that he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. They […]

Although the “Journal of Jean Laffite” was introduced to the public by John Andrechyne Laflin, a person with a shady past and a reputation as a forger, we cannot entirely discount his claim that there was some […]
